The weatherman is predicting we are going to have temperatures in the 20's C
this week!
That sounded so good to me that I decided to bring out the patio furniture and plan a family bbq for Good Friday.
I am looking forward to having everyone together for the first bbq of the season!
How is the weather where you are this week?

Spring Clean-Up
Good Morning!
Today I am going to be out in the yard raking, cleaning the patio, getting out the patio furniture from winter storage and washing it all down in preparation for our Family BBQ on Good Friday.
I no doubt will need to make a dump run as there is my old bathroom sink and cupboard out back and an old BBQ that needs to go as well as all the leaves I will be raking up.
I will be taking advantage of the nice weather we are going to be having this week to get things ready for Friday.
I will be sure to share pictures of Friday's gathering.
Do you enjoy yard work?

My Little Earth Angel
Yesterday I had a wonderful visit with my son, my daughter-in-law and my little earth angel.
We blew bubbles, played clapping games, drove her Daddy to work.
We went to Chapters where she knows her way around.
The minute we got in the door and her Mommy put her down she scooted right away over to the wooden train set they have set-up in the children's book area.
We had a great time looking at the toys and books.
We also went shopping at Value Village, where I purchased her a pretty little cardigan someone had knitted.
On the way home we stopped at Subway where her Mommy and I picked up submarines for lunch and drove back to their house to eat, her Mommy made her some curried vegetables and rice.
She ate all her lunch while my daughter-in-law and I talked about having a family BBQ on Good Friday and about all the yard sales and flea markets we will have to go to this spring and about other fun things we can share this summer.
What did you do on the weekend?

UFC 111
Had a great night last night watching the UFC 111.
What a nice way to spend an evening with a few friends...we had an assortment of beverages and a pound of pistachio nuts and a whole lot of laughs...Happy Birthday Dewey<3
There were some fantastic fights!
Unfortunately the St. Pierre fight seemed so slow after watching the fight between Carwin and Mir!
Today I am going to visit with my little earth angel and spend the morning thrifting!
This afternoon I plan on making banana cakes again as I have had lots of requests for more and I do have some bananas that need to be used up.
What are your plans for this sunny Sunday?

Birthday Saturday
Today happens to be the birthdays of two of my favorite people, my niece and my sweetie.
I will be spending my morning baking a pie as my sweetie dislikes cake.
I was planning on making a coconut cream pie but when I was out shopping he mentioned he would like a raisin pie this year so I purchased all the ingredients I needed for that.
When I arrived home my sweetie was talking on the phone to his mother and apparently she has made him a raisin pie for his birthday so I guess tomorrow I go back to the grocery store and purchase the ingredients to make him a coconut cream pie.
I purchased for him a rare first printing of the James Audubon Birds of North America at an auction for a song.
I am anxious to give it to him as he has done a few pieces of artwork lately that he could have used the pictures in this book for a guide on colouring of some of the birds.
How do you celebrate birthdays in your home?
Does the birthday person have their choice of meal and cake/pie?

Friday's Favorites
Well, we made it through another winter and now for the much anticipated spring weather...these below zero temperatures these past few days sure doesn't make it feel very much like spring!
Here's a recipe guaranteed to warm you up!
Chicken Diablo
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
This recipe will cook 6-8 chicken pieces, I use chicken breasts sometimes with skin and sometimes without I serve this on a bed of rice and a salad on the side.
Mix in a bowl:
4 tablespoons of melted butter
1/2 cup of honey
1/4 cup of mustard (I use hot mustard but if you prefer it to be not so spicy/hot use regular mustard).
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of curry powder
1 teaspoon of curry paste
1-2 teaspoons of chili powder(add one then taste it if you would like more, add more)
Mix these ingredients together and coat chicken and place in baking dish and pour rest of sauce on top, cover and bake for 45 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the chicken pieces.
Baste chicken pieces 3-4 times while baking and remove the lid for the last 15-20 minutes of baking time.
Enjoy!

Wednesday Already?
This week has passed by so quickly...I did have big plans for this week and of course they had to be changed due to feeling like crap!!!!
Hopefully next month the tests will show what the heck is wrong...unfortunately it will take me until the middle of June to get my results, meaning it will have been 11 months of pain and I am almost ready to blow my head off...lucky I don't own a gun.
I hope that you will have a healthy spring 2010.

Showers for Flowers
As much as I would love to see the sun shining today, I have got to remember that with these spring showers come all the beautiful flowers!
I sure don't want to rush the season but...once I had a look at some of my pictures of my flowers from last spring it makes me want to enjoy the beauty of all the blossoming trees and flowers as soon as possible!

Spring!
Well we have enjoyed some great weather this March and I do hope that you all took advantage of it.
I hated to wake this morning to SNOW!
Remember it is March and today being the first day of spring makes it a little easier to swallow.
Have a great Sunday snow or not....IT'S SPRING!!!!!

RIP Smudge
My sweet little girlie Smudge had to be put down yesterday.
She will be missed terribly.
I know I probably could have kept her alive for a few more days but why make the poor dear suffer more than she already has.
I have been trying to nurse her back to health for the last 6 weeks she would go from looking ready for the rag bag one day to looking like her old self the next.
On her good days I would have hope that she would be her old self again and on her bad days feeling as though I was being cruel keeping her alive because I didn't want to lose her.
Thursday night she started losing bowel and bladder control and Friday morning she didn't even have the strength to clean herself.
As much as I loved her I couldn't watch her suffer anymore and had to have her put down.
The only consolation is that I know for the 11 years she was with us she had a good life.
I am truly gonna miss her little paw reaching up to me for some cuddles and how she use to talk my ear off, as long as you would talk to her she would talk back.
May you rest in peace Smudge<3

Sunny March
Well this certainly has been a beautiful March ~ weather wise.
As you can see by the above photo the lawn is starting to green up and the little bit of snow that is left is in the foreground.
The temperature yesterday was 17 C people were coatless and outside enjoying the sunshine.
How have you been spending your time in this beautiful March weather?

I can't believe the nice weather we have been blessed with this past winter.
The last two weeks have been unbelievable and this week is suppose to be exceptional as well they are calling for temperatures to reach 15 or 16 degrees!
I am planning on enjoying every minute of it while it lasts.
I am sure we will still be in for a dumping of snow before too long.
I have noticed that the crocus' are up and the grass is actually starting to green up.
I hope that you are enjoying some nice weather this week too.
Any plans for the March Break this week?

Wonderful Weekend
Good morning!
Click on the title of my blog "Wonderful Weekend" to be linked to the video.
I can't believe how quickly this weekend passed by.
I spent Saturday baking banana cakes and doing some visiting with some friends.
Saturday night I went to Bunker's Hideout in Marmora Ontario to see the band The Remedy.
If you ever get a chance to see this band, they are from the Quinte area and they are fantastic.
The drummer in the band is Chris Toms he is not only talented he is one of the nicest young men you will meet.
I added a link to a video of the band taken with cell phone but non the less a taste of what you missed this past weekend.
Enjoy!
Sunday I had a play date with my little earth angel Gretchen Fawn.
We played the day away, I don't know whether or not she napped after I left but I can tell you I was so played out I sure did!

Sunday Morning
Good morning!
Today is going to be a wonderful day, I plan on going to see my little earth angel.
No matter how down in the dumps I get, a visit with my little earth angel Gretchen always gives me the lift I need.
Although I don't get to spend as much time with her as I would like to, I treasure every moment we share.
The picture above was taken by my daughter-in-law, apparently Gretchen was helping her do the laundry.
Now that I have shared with you my plans for the day, how about sharing with me yours?

Bring On The Sunshine!
This past week has been wonderful for taking long walks in the sunshine.
For the first week in March the weather has been unbelievable!
Today the temperature is suppose to reach double digits and I am planning to go to the farmer's market and purchase some root vegetables to make a stew.
I promise I will share my recipe for this fabulous stew and the biscuits I make to go along with this hearty meal on Friday's Favorites !
I hope you all get out in the sunshine this weekend and enjoy the taste of spring that mother nature has given us.
What are you planning to do this sunny Saturday?

Friday's Favorites!
It's Friday again and as promised I am posting one of my favorite recipes.
I actually made this recipe this week and my parents and myself have been enjoying it for lunches with a nice loaf of french bread.
Potato/Leek Soup
3 leeks sliced (ensure you soak them well to get all the grit out)
2 small onions diced
2 cloves of garlic minced
2 potatoes peeled and diced
3 cups chicken broth
1 quart of heavy cream (Whipping cream or cereal cream works well too)
1 quart of milk
cornstarch
1/4 pound of butter
Salt and Pepper
I usually start out with my stock pot as it starts out large and cooks down quite a bit, in the end you have about half as much.
This recipe makes about 12 generous servings.
In large stock pot melt butter over medium heat.
Add leeks, onion and garlic.
Saute` until tender but not brown.
Add the broth, potato, salt and pepper and cook until potato about half cooked.
Add the cream and 1/2 the milk and turn the heat down to low and cook over low stirring often for 2-3 hours.
Once your potato is cooked through (firm not mushy) mix cornstarch (I use about 4-6 tablespoons full) and the rest of the milk together and stir into the soup continue cooking until the soup is the desired consistency
( this will probably take another hour on a medium heat) ensure you stir more often as you don't want to scorch your soup!
Serve and enjoy!
(This is recipe less the leeks, onions, potatoes and garlic is the base for all my cream soups).

Cat Love
Today I thought I would introduce you to my companions.
The top picture is of my pretty calico Smudge, although she looks to be a kitten she is 11 years old.
The bottom picture is my handsome lynx point Smokey-Joe, he will be turning 14 in April.
These cats are great company and love to spend their time out in the yard eating up the catnip that grows around the gardens and the chives that grow in the vegetable garden.
When they are not in the yard they are at my parents door begging for treats.
Smudge patiently waits but Smokey-Joe actually knocks on the door until my Dad shows up to give him a treat and a bit of attention.
This has been a ritual for the past 10 years and it doesn't seem to matter how nasty the weather is Smokey-Joe will sit and knock and wait, if that doesn't work he positions himself so he can see what is going on in their house either through the window of the back door, their kitchen window or on their front porch to look in through the front door.
Do you have a pet story you would like to share?

Left-handed Scissors?
Good moring! I have been having a time with my scissors again today and to prove once again that left handed and right handed scissors are made differently I felt I had to re-post this for all the right handed people in my household that keep using my left handed scissors.
I thought today I would share with you one of my pet peeves of being a lefty...SCISSORS!!!!
If you are a lefty you know the aggravation I am feeling when faced with the task of using scissors.
In my home there are about 10 pairs of scissors , most of them right handed.
Trying to keep my left handed scissors out of the grips of the right handed people in my household has been difficult.
With so many pairs of right handed scissors why do they need to ruin mine?
The answer is, they do not put things back in their place when they finished using them so mine are the easiest pair to find when doing anything because they are put back in the place they belong when I finish using them.
Left handed scissors are made to be used by left handed people, they are made different and when a right handed person uses them they tend to pull the blades apart rendering them useless to the lefty that picks them up to use them left handed.
I have had many arguments over the years about this and I finally found an article that actually backed up my claims.

I have had many arguments over the years about this and I finally found an article that actually backed up my claims.
" Right-hand scissors, the part of the scissors lying `on top' at
the intersection of the two parts, will be the one
from top-left
to bottom-right, whereas for left-hand scissors,
the uppermost will
be the part from bottom-left to top-right.
Turning the scissors around
or up-side down won't change this relationship.
Secondly the reason for this difference lies in the
way the scissors are opened and closed
by your left or right hand.
When you close the scissors,
the cutting edges close and the
cutting edges
are pressed together because your fingers holding
the scissors bend
and your thumb stretches.
If the cutting edges are pushed away from
each other, the material being cut slides in between,
and is definitely not cut.
This is what happens when you use
right-hand scissors
with your left hand.
Since your left hand is a mirrored version of your
right hand,
your scissors should be `mirrored' as well.
This is why the cutting
edges are made on the opposite side of each part,
and the parts
are assembled just the opposite way, giving you
perfect left-handed
scissors."
My thanks go out to Jurgen Van Engelen for
providing the right-handed people in my household with proof that what I have been saying all these years is so!

Smoke-free !
Well, it has been 24 hours and I am smoke-free and not missing it a bit!
This time I really took a long, hard look as to why I have failed to become a non-smoker.
I came to realize that it has been how I have been looking at stopping smoking...I always looked at it as if I would eventually become a non-smoker if I could just ignore cigarettes.
This time I realize that the minute I put my cigarette out, I am a non-smoker.
I am not depriving myself of anything but better health and many other positive gains.
I keep telling myself each time I feel the craving for a cigarette that it is a good thing, that it is just my body purging itself of all the nasty chemicals I have been putting into it for the past 36 years and within a few weeks my body will recover... Day one, the first day of the rest of my life as a non-smoker and feeling wonderful!

Monday, Monday...
Welcome to the first day of March!
Today is the day I marked on my calendar as my quit smoking date and am determined to do it this time!
I have stopped smoking many times before and tried patches, gum, books, hypnotism.
This time it is going to be with sheer willpower and the support of my family and friends.
It has to be the hardest thing that I have ever had to accomplish and I know from past experience that while I was quit I felt great.
Unfortunately it is really hard to stay quit when everyone around you is still smoking and each room you enter has a package of cigarettes laying on the table...
I have to say, I won't miss coughing my brains out every morning when I awake.
Anyone have any tips to help make this attempt successful ?
